A court has slapped a fine of 4,989 USD on a Douala-based businessman and sentenced him to 45 days in jail for poaching and trafficking in elephant ivory. Mahama Sani was found guilty on charges pressed against him by Cameroon's Forestry and Wildlife Ministry on Friday at Yokadouma, east of Cameroon.

The convict is expected to pay 4,338 USD to the Forestry Ministry while the remaining 651 USD goes into settling judiciary fees. The presiding judge said the punishment is intended to serve as a deterrent to potential poachers in Cameroon.
